This week we were faced with an unexpected challenge. We were told that we needed to stop our bake sale because it was never approved by the administration. This caused a huge set back for our group. We decided to finish the project here and donate what money we had collected so far. This challenge was very upsetting for us because we were excited about continuing our project for at least a few more weeks. When given the green light for our project, we didn't expect the challenges that would come along. The time and effort that needed to be put in was very exhausting, but could be done, unfortunately, the administrations approval is not something we could overcome at this point in our project. Even if we could get them to agree, it would take a lengthy process, and by that time, the project would be due. I believe the money we made will make a sufficient impact in the lives of women in need. This was definitely a learning experience and has taught us to make sure that everything is in order before we take action. Approval by our school is necessary, but we overlooked that in the beginning process of our project.
I've begun selling my product and sales seem to be going well. People are very fond of the cookies especially, mainly because it is semi-homemade. I've been selling 2 for $0.75 and 4 for $1.25 and made about $17 the first day. Sales are not that consistent, because it all depends on what classes I have each day. For instance, my English and History class buys more than my others. Some other variables are what time of the day it is and how many people I see. Usually I get more sales in the afternoon because everyone is craving an after school snack.. We have all posted on social media about our project and what are cause is for the fundraiser. With every sale, I thank the customer and explain to them that they are helping underprivileged women in Africa. I want to make sure that each of them know about are cause and where their money is going to. This is how we will spread the word about our cause and address the problems of inequality specifically in Sierra Leone.
This week I went out and bought all of my supplies. My mom and I went to Costco and bought two large tubs of cookie dough, a box of pop-tarts containing 24 packs, and boxes of fig bars. By going to Costco, the quantities were larger and the prices were cheaper, making the fundraiser much more profitable. I set aside my Saturday to bake and package the cookies. I've found the profit that I must make and am packaging the cookies accordingly. It took about 5 hours to bake and package cookies, because I hand wrote labels with our project title. This made the process a little longer but added a bit of flare to attract customers and address the cause. A challenge with baking was that I had no help and my oven could only bake 12 cookies at a time. However, this was a good learning experience, in that I will not always have help and there are many more challenging jobs than this.
During this week, we have discussed more about what we will bake and how we will proceed. Iʻve talked to my parents about the net income and how I will profit from what I spent. Iʻve decided on baking cookies and also selling pop-tarts and fig bars. I found this useful because everyone at school gets hungry and wants an afternoon snack. I have yet to decide on how to package them and sell, however, I do believe I am making progress. I am excited about this project because I love to bake especially if I am doing it for a good cause. We all hope that by doing this fundraiser, it will spread the word about inequality specifically in Sierra Leone. We want to get the message out there that women are struggling and deserve proper education and health care, but most importantly respect. I believe that it is our job as women to support other women. By spreading the word and donating our profit, we will be helping these women lead better lives.
This week was mainly planning out our project. We have decided to fund the Women Empowerment for Rights and Equality which is helps women in Sierra Leone get the necessary education and health care for quality living. The three of us decided on this foundation because we are all women who recognize the challenges other women face especially in third world countries. This organization is devoted to empowering women because they believe in the quality life women should live. Keahi, Aliyah, and I have decided on fundraising our money by hosting a bake sale. We are researching ideas for what we want to bake, however, we still need to buy supplies and calculate the profit we want to make.
